LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences. In the last week of March, I went on spring break in Florida, and on March 28th, I decided to go for a hike at the West Palm Beach botanical gardens. The gardens were beautiful, and I got to see lots of unique plants that are not grown in Michigan. Although the garden was about 30 minutes away from the hotel, I knew that this would be a great experience to appreciate nature, and get some exercise. I saw bamboo, palm trees, cacti, and many lizards. The weather was very warm, but it still was a great activity to do while on spring break. I love plants, and nature, and this definitely made me think a lot about my biology learning.

LO5:Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively. On March 18th, my school's student council held a charity ball dance, to raise money for "Leveling the Playing Field", a charity organization that supports giving access to sports for the less privileged. After the dance, me and several of my fellow student council members volunteered to clean up the decorations, including a photo wall, balloon arch, streamers, plastic water bottles, put away tables. This job could not have been done as quickly and efficiently as it was without the collaborative effort of many people, and it was great to be able to all work together to get the job done. My favorite part was putting away tables, especially when my sister left her phone in an already put away table, and had to crawl through and get it. I was so proud of how nice the Charity ball looked, but it also came down relatively easily. Hopefully, in time, these great decorations will entice more people to come, and raise even more money for charity.
3. Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience. On February 23rd, I decided that I wanted to try to decorate cupcakes. While I really liked baking in elementary school, (and still do), my decorating skills are not very good. Nevertheless, I initiated this experience with my friend, Erin. I researched the easiest ways to decorate cupcakes, and I decided to buy mini-icing tubes to pipe on details. Then, I went to the store to buy food dye, mini-icing tubes, and ingredients. When Erin arrived, we started to bake! The making of the cupcakes was pretty easy, and we eventually got everything in the oven. Then we divided the frosting into 5 different bowls, and added dye to mix the colors. When the cupcakes were done baking, we then attempted to decorate them with a variety of designs. My favorite one was probably the simplest, with a small smiley face on a yellow cupcake. However, we made custom cupcakes for different members of our family, and different friends, with varying levels of success. Overall, I had lots of fun making cupcakes, and this CAS experience, while simple, ended in a very yummy result.
LO1: Identify your own strengths and develop areas for personal growth. On February 10th, I decided to go to spikeball club, before school. I had never been able to go to this club before, because TOK was before school, but I knew that I would have fun. I had only played spikeball a few times before, so I had a lot to learn, and lots of areas to grow. In my first game, I played against a few friends, and it was close, but I lost. But the next game, after a tight game, I won! This was a great way to get some exercise before school, and play a new game that challenged me. I will definitely continue to go to spikeball, and hopefully grow as a spikeball player. The picture below was a fun collage that another spikeball club member made, that shows all of the members the meeting that day!
